'Mirror Me' - by Sophie Mars

‘Mirror Me’ includes an immersive one-to-one VR performance, an audio installation with interactive exercises and a talk with curator Sasha Burkhanova-Khabadze. The aim of the project is to create a space for audience members/participants to learn about themselves and experience themselves and their bodies in different ways. Combining Mars’s background in dance movement therapy, immersive/participatory performance and new technologies, this project looks at the transformative potential within these practices, looking at how coupling technology, embodiment practices and imagination may expand our sense of self and asks questions such as: how to enhance embodied awareness using new technologies? What contemporary tools can help us better understand ourselves? how can we feel more connected to ourselves and to our bodies? How can we create alternate ways of seeing our bodies and selves? How can VR be used as an imaginative way to connect with other realms and possibilities? Who are we and where are we going?

Following the VR performance Mars will offer individualized body-mind pointers for carrying the potential benefits of this experience with you, as well as a short feedback form to allow for collective evaluation of these practices.

This project was supported by the RBKC Arts Grant Scheme.

Sophie Mars is a dance + performance artist and dance therapist. She is interested in participatory and immersive work exploring collective energy and idiosyncratic movement as new means of viewing and transforming space both physically and ontologically. Always interrogating the role of the body in today’s digital context she uses new technologies to explore physical and virtual interstices creating uncanny dreamlike worlds that are both familiar and surreal.

All her current work is linked to her project ‘Mindful practices for a future body - (or how to reprogramme ourselves)’ - an ongoing large-scale project with several branches in which she examines new ways of relating to our bodies and our environment. She has performed at ICA, London, HKW for Transmediale Berlin and Rewire Festival, offered workshops across platforms such as Shesaid.so, St Joost School of Fine Art and Design and the psychedelic therapy research institute Mind Foundation and is a member of the holistic healing collective Joyspace.
